Ruins of Tikal

Tikalaerial The Tikal National Park is located in the province of Peten, north of Guatemala, bordering with Mexico at the base of Yucatan. It comprises an area of 222 mi2, and contains the most fascinating archaeological remains of Mayan Civilization. Pennsylvania University excavated this region between 1956 and 1969, making Tikal the largest excavated site in the American continent. The excavation continued, along with the restoration process, under the National Tikal University of San Carlos and the Anthropology and History Institute. this project revealed wonders beyond imagination, and the Park is now managed by the University. Lot of mounds were left untouched, covered by thick layers of jungle, for over 1000 years, as they were found by the archaeologists. The restoration still continues, as well as the discovery of this amazing Maya Civilization legacy.
