Burning of the Devil

1_3Every year on December 7th, Guatemalans of every stripe take out old household items, waste paper, clothing and every other combustible thing out in front of their houses and set it all afire to represent burning the devil and to purify their households for the holy weeks ahead. A tour of the residential streets provides an alarming spectacle, Guatemala City in flames, its blue skies gone black with smoke.
