The capital of El Salvador is situated on the Ace Chaute River, in the central part of the country; near San Salvador Volcano.
Since the Spanish established themselves there in 1528, San Salvador has been hit by several earthquakes and the community suffered during the civil war in the 1980s.
The destroyed colonial buildings have been replaced by modern buildings and plazas.
Lake Ilopango and the port city of La Libertad are nearby.

Tazumal, is a Pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site located in Chalchuapa, El Salvador, and its name means "place where the victims were burned". This ruins dates from the 900, and are considered the most important and best preserved in the country, and the archaeologists believe that the first settlements in this area were around 5000 BC.
The Santa Ana Volcano is in the Santa Ana department, it has a height of 2.381 meters above sea level and is one of the highest points in the country. It erupted in October 2005, forcing an evacuation to the nearby town of San Blas. The previous eruption happened back in 1920.
